This Silla knight pottery figurine has the magical function of guiding the souls of the deceased to the other world through drought and waterways. Silla knights wore triangular hats with a light hole on the horse's hip, a water hole in the shape of a wine cup or Bronze, a hole in the bottom, and a long beak protruding from the chest so that water could be poured from the horse's empty stomach. The Silla Knights' pottery figurines are made of hard material and are a very important cultural relic. They are very helpful for studying the Silla's perspectives on the soul, clothing, weapons, horses and handicrafts at that time. Silla pottery is a type of hard gray pottery fired at a temperature above 1000°C. It has a dense structure and high strength, similar to stoneware. In the early days of Silla pottery, the clay strip-rolling method was mainly used for shaping. In the mid-4th century, the wheel-shaping method began to be used. Silla pottery was not glazed, but used high temperatures to vitrify the silica in the soil, creating a smooth effect similar to glaze on the surface of the pottery. Due to the custom of thick burials in Silla, the unearthed pottery includes many special-shaped pottery such as cars, boats, and dolls. Among the human figure pottery, the Silla knight pottery figurine is the type of war god at that time. It was excavated together with the boat-shaped pottery at Geumnyeongchong, Gyeongju City, North Gyeongsang Province in 1924. This Silla knight pottery figurine was discovered on December 20, 1962. It was designated as South Korea’s National Treasure No. 91 and is displayed at the Seoul Museum in South Korea (as shown in the attached picture). This Silla knight terracotta figurine is almost identical to the one displayed in the museum. The only slight difference is the facial expression of the Silla knight. In addition, Korean ceramics had a great influence on the development of Japanese ceramics. Sue ware from Japan's Tumulus Period, as well as Arita ware and Satsuma ware after the Wanli Korean War were all introduced to Japan from the Korean Peninsula. During the Wanli Korean War, Korean porcelain craftsmen introduced porcelain-making technology from Korea to Japan, bringing Japan from the pottery age to the porcelain age. This Silla knight pottery figurine was purchased from a Japanese antique dealer Kanai Kawaichi in 1990.
