**Pygmy Three-toed Sloth**
The Pygmy Three-toed Sloth lives on a small island in Panama. Due to island isolation, their body size is significantly smaller than their relatives on the mainland of Central and South America, with adults weighing only four to seven kilograms. Algae grow symbiotically in their fur, providing camouflage that reduces their chances of being preyed upon by carnivores.
With an extremely narrow distribution, the population of the Pygmy Three-toed Sloth has always been small. Furthermore, the island lacks strict regulations, and these slow-moving sloths are frequently captured by humans and sold to zoos or as pets, leading to fewer than 80 Pygmy Three-toed Sloths remaining on the island, placing them in a constant state of potential extinction.
**IUCN Status: Critically Endangered (CR)**
