Carved onto both sides of their traditional plank canoes, it symbolizes warding off evil, ensuring safe passage, and guiding the way. The pattern radiates outwards from a central circle, like the sun's rays illuminating the sea route, leading returning fishermen safely home. We drift through life, much like a plank canoe floating on the vast, boundless ocean. For those who no longer build boats, the Eye of the Boat is chosen as a tattoo or worn around the neck, a hopeful beacon against getting lost on life's journey. | About This Piece | The people of Orchid Island possess their own lunar calendar and seasonal rituals. Traditions and taboos passed down through generations serve as their guide on the island. At the end of the flying fish season, the Tao people enter their "pitanatana" or "pottery month," believing this to be the most opportune time for crafting ceramics. Traditionally, only men were permitted to participate in pottery making, strictly adhering to the ancient prohibitions and customs during the process. The Tao are among the few Taiwanese indigenous groups who still maintain pottery traditions. They categorize the quality of clay into blue, red, and yellow. The rarest and highest quality is the blue clay, found only at mountain peaks and the headwaters of streams. This Eye of the Boat necklace incorporates this precious blue clay.
