| Production Group: Sasha |
Founded in 1978 in Kolkata in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, this not-for-profit group of producers produces clothing and interior items using traditional techniques. Initially, our activities supported the self-reliance of disadvantaged sections of Indian society, supported the production of traditional handicrafts, and provided employment opportunities. We currently provide technical mentoring, marketing, business skills improvement programs and microfinance support to over 100 small producer groups in West Bengal and Odisha. We are also a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and follow and implement the ten principles of fair trade.
Artisans at Sasha Handicraft create gorgeous hand-printed silk dresses and tops using a range of traditional techniques, including handweaving, tie-dyeing, hand embroidery, woodblock printing, metalworking and embossed leather
People Tree works with artisans to make the most of their traditional techniques and create contemporary designs. Sasha Handicraft also has a program to upskill village artisans and we work with People Tree to provide technical training, design and financial support.
