After the 1830s, a new type of publication appeared in Europe and the United States, appealing for fashionable dress, because of the emergence of a new middle class, fashion gradually became a trend. This kind of publication showing people's clothing and popular clothing at the time required a lot of illustrations, so illustration production has become an important tool for expressing fashion. At this time, the illustration artist used different printmaking techniques, such as direct copper engraving, etching and lithographs, to complete many plates, and then hand-painted them one by one.
Adele-Anaïs Colin Toudouze (Adele-Anaïs Colin Toudouze, 1822/1899) was a famous French fashion pictorial illustration artist in the nineteenth century. His parents were both painters. He grew up in the world of artistic creation. . She ranks second, and her elder sister and two younger sisters are also engaged in artistic creation. She and her sisters produced many illustrations for the popular fashion pictorial at the time, with similar styles. His father supported the romantic movement at that time, and the famous painters Eugène Delacroix (1798/1863), Théodore Géricault (1791 / 1824) and Cavani (Paul Gavarni, 1804, Paris) – 24 November 1866) The mutual kindness also made Annas fall in love with this new artistic trend, and her creations also have a romantic style. Under the influence of her father, the four sisters of this family have achieved their own achievements in the art world, and won many salon awards when they were young. Unlike the female artists at this time who concentrated on creating historical and religious paintings, they did not follow the techniques of academies and had their own special features.
Annas’ youngest daughter became a fashion illustrator and painter like her mother, while the eldest son became a novelist and wrote about their family’s fashion illustrator history. The second son was also a painter and inherited the family’s traditions. Annas made illustrations for 27 fashion publications in her life. This fashion publication, popular in the 1830s and 1870s, provided considerable work for female illustration artists. Annas mainly collaborated with the publication La Mode Illustrée (1859 / early 20th century). This weekly magazine presents Victoria’s fashion taste, from clothing accessories to everything. The illustration of the publication used the copperplate that was still an important printmaking technique at the time, highlighting the texture of the picture, and at the same time with meticulous hand-painted color, interspersed with text descriptions, leading the fashion taste throughout Europe. Because of her solid skills and unique style, Annas is highly sought after by various pictorials, so she also made illustrations for British fashion publications across the sea. She and Jules David (1808/1892), another well-known fashion illustrator at the time, were rivals with each other, and each opened up different styles for fashion illustrations.
In the works of Annas Tordus, her copperplate lines are elegant and light, and she rarely uses contrasting thick and crossed lines. As for the depiction of characters, you can see her preference from the models with melon-faced faces. At the same time, the female figure is also More slender, she has erected a model in the "industry" of Fashion Pictorial. It is no wonder that she has made illustrations for 27 fashion publications in her life, and she has also traveled across the sea to the United Kingdom. Annas's ability to make a name in this industry has its own specialties. Her works are also collected by many art museums, the most famous of which is the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
