In the late Edo period, under the "Sumptuary Law for Farmers" which restricted the use of cotton for commoners, farmers had to use linen. However, linen clothing offered little protection against the long, snowy, and cold climate of Japan's Tohoku region. To improve insulation and strengthen the fabric, farmers began weaving threads through the linen's existing holes, leading to the development of Kogin-zashi. This embroidery requires counting the warp threads (essentially counting squares) and executing satin stitches row by row. If even a single stitch is misplaced, the entire section must be unpicked and redone. Thus, every stitch in Kogin-zashi is a testament to keen eyesight and patience—a craft characterized by its delicacy and devotion. For an even more refined look, our artisan uses a special Kogin-zashi cloth with smaller squares, resulting in denser and more vibrant patterns.
