Like the old-school food court on the fourth floor of Yongle Market—now only visible in the movie Lucy. Even the newly rebuilt western-style buildings slowly sprout fresh acrylic signage, while nearby buildings are constantly being demolished and redeveloped. Dihua Street might appear as a street of red brick facades, but beneath, it’s a world of concrete. What we think of as “traditional” has long been quietly buried beneath cement, its traces carefully concealed. Every element in this fabric pattern represents my lived experience here. The cross-shaped structure resembles a map, symbolizing old buildings demolished during urban renewal—replaced by new steel frameworks rapidly rising from the ground. Here, single-story houses are constantly being torn down. The once-open view of Guanyin Mountain is gradually obscured by newly planted steel-grid structures. The entire city feels like it’s in a constant state of transformation. Sometimes, the grid-like pattern reminds me of a map. Even after all these years, I still find myself getting lost in the maze of Yongle Market. When I reflect quietly on Dihua Street, I feel like a passerby in a help-wanted ad—or like an apartment building marked for demolition. Decades of memory vanish without a trace, and new steel and concrete move in to write the next chapter.
