Shuifei Sand, Imperial Sand, Purple Gold Sand, and Crystal Sand are all high-content cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and manufacturing methods**.
**「Shuifei Sand」**
**True red with a slight orange hue. The surface has a warm, frosted luster that will become brighter with wear, forming a patina.**
The manufacturing method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, and collecting the upper "turbid liquid" after settling. This is then allowed to settle again (the water-flotation purification method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then formed using traditional pressing methods. Fine, uniform mineral sparkles can still be seen on the cross-section.
**「Imperial Sand」**
**The color is a brighter true red, with higher hardness.**
The manufacturing method involves multiple processes such as **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water flotation/high polishing** from natural raw cinnabar ore, followed by traditional pressing. Imperial Sand has almost no surface sparkles, but has internal sparkles. The surface features a **high-polishing** process to achieve a metallic texture, especially under sunlight, enhancing the metallic feel.
**「Purple Gold Sand」**
**The color is purplish-red, with slightly lower hardness than Imperial Sand.**
The manufacturing method involves multiple processes such as **crushing/grinding/screening** from natural raw cinnabar ore, but **without water flotation purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine and has scattered small sparkling mineral particles, creating a "starry sky" effect.
**「Crystal Sand」**
**The color is purplish-red and translucent.**
Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from cinnabar ore. The surface clearly shows large crystal particles that are translucent under light, emitting a fluorescent red glow.

**> Cinnabar**
The earliest written records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is a pictographic character representing ancient miners extracting minerals from wells. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying something taken from a mine shaft. This something is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, cinnabar was called "朱砂" (zhūshā). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregular granular minerals.
The color of cinnabar is fade-resistant. Chinese calligraphy and painting are called "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. An indispensable component of pigments, "八宝印泥" (bā bǎo yìn ní, eight-treasure ink paste), also has cinnabar as its main ingredient.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that gather the essence of the sun and moon, absorbing the pure energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a strong positive magnetic field. We can observe that jade feels cool to the touch, while cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in Taoist rituals for writing talismans, consecration, warding off evil, and suppressing malevolent energies. Cinnabar has always been regarded as a supreme item for enhancing luck, suppressing evil, driving away negative influences, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of good fortune, wealth, and well-being.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior herbal medicine, often used in treatments for calming the spirit, detoxifying, and alleviating insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also cultivate one's character, soothe the eyes, and nurture the heart.
**> Identification**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar and have a strong sense of weight. You can use the following methods for identification:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat indirectly. It is generally not recommended to directly burn finished products as the time and area cannot be controlled. If burned for too long, it will turn black and cannot be restored.)
>. Real cinnabar can draw an orangish-red line on paper. (To avoid damaging the appearance of the finished product, please choose an inconspicuous area to draw the line, or use the complimentary bead to draw the line.)
**> Care**
1. Avoid corrosion and fire.
2. Do not use chemical bleaching.
3. Do not soak in water for extended periods.
4. Do not brush, scrub, rub, or pick at it.
5. If it gets dirty, wash it gently with clean water and air dry naturally.
