What is Vegetable-Tanned Leather?
Vegetable tanning is a traditional method of processing raw hides. It is the most traditional and the only method that imparts unique characteristics to leather. Unlike other tanning processes that may use harmful heavy metals, benzene, or phenols, vegetable tanning utilizes natural tannins from plants, making it environmentally friendly. The top layer of leather tanned with vegetable tanning agents (like tannic acid and polyphenols) extracted from plants is known as vegetable-tanned leather, or "Vegetable tanned leather" in English. Vegetable-tanned leather, after tanning and greasing, has a dense fiber structure with minimal stretch, excellent formability, a full and elastic feel without greasiness, and a lustrous grain and suede surface. It is free from harmful substances and safe for direct skin contact, suitable for leather goods that come into direct contact with the body.
Leather Usage Guidelines
- Cleaning
Generally, it's recommended to avoid excessive cleaning. As the leather darkens over time, minor marks often blend in, contributing to a unique, rustic aesthetic. If small amounts of water accidentally splash onto the surface, they will quickly absorb and evaporate without leaving a trace once dry. Exercise caution to avoid contact with oily liquids.
- Care
Natural leather, much like human skin, requires protection from oils. Your skin naturally produces oils that form a protective film on leather goods. Regular use gives leather a warm luster and a rich, deep color. Since leather is largely composed of fats, proper conditioning with appropriate oils enhances the color development of vegetable-tanned leather. Animal-based fats are generally recommended for conditioning due to their similarity to natural skin oils, offering the best care effects. Mink oil is a commonly used animal oil, often referred to as a "protector" for leather goods. While it may not significantly alter the color of vegetable-tanned leather, it might initially deepen the hue. As the oil absorbs and evaporates, the leather's color will gradually return to its original shade, making it suitable for daily maintenance.
