The koi is an ornamental fish native to China, evolving from wild carp into colorful varieties. The earliest records of red carp can be found in the Classic of Mountains and Seas ("Classic of Mountains and Seas"): "The Sui River originates there, flowing southeast into the Yangtze River. It contains abundant red cinnabar and colorful fish." During the Jin and Tang dynasties, people began to raise red carp in concentrated groups. Koi cultivation began in the Song dynasty, and by the Ming dynasty, varieties with double tails and protruding eyes had been developed. Keeping koi in pots became a common practice in the mid to late periods. The first koi were transported to Japan in 1502; they were first sent to Portugal in 1611 and began to multiply in Europe; the first shipment to the United States arrived in 1874, where they gained popularity across the continent.
