The black detailing is achieved through a special sulphidation treatment. Q: What is the common "sulphidation treatment" for Nepalese jewelry? A: When silver jewelry appears black, "oxidation" is a common layman's term. Oxidation refers to a substance reacting with oxygen. However, silver (jewelry) turning black is a reaction with "sulfur" in the air, forming "silver sulfide." The black substance on the surface of silver (jewelry) (which can appear coffee, light brown, dark brown, or reddish-brown) is "silver sulfide." If regular silver (jewelry) is not properly maintained, it will turn black and lose its luster, so the correct term is "sulphidation."
