We refrain from applying any varnish or glue around the edges, which are common methods to prevent end-grain cracking. The essence of a truly natural and non-toxic solid wood cutting board lies in selecting a material that is "rich in natural oils and finely textured," complemented by appropriate natural methods to mitigate cracking. Many lower-quality wooden cutting boards are treated on the end grain (the outer edges) with chemical varnishes or anti-cracking glues to prevent dry splitting. These substances not only coat the surface, but the wood fibers act like tightly bound straws. When varnish or glue is applied to the edges, the capillary action of the wood draws these chemicals and solvents deep into the material.
