Its leaves look soft and buttery — the name means "little fat one" in Latin — but they are coated in tiny sticky glands, and small insects that land there do not leave: the leaf slowly folds and digests them, extracting nitrogen from their bodies to supplement what the poor, wet soil it grows in cannot provide. It is a carnivorous plant that does not announce itself. Unlike the Venus flytrap with its dramatic snapping jaws, the pinguicula simply waits. Pinguiculas grow in wet, rocky, nutrient-poor habitats: mountain cliffs, boggy stream margins, mossy wet rocks in the Alps and Apennines.
