Who can heal Taiwan's "ills"?
"One Island, One Dream" chronicles the life stories of three remarkable individuals. They lived with conviction in bygone eras, upholding the values they believed in while facing adversity with solitude. Each dared to dream audacious dreams that seemed impossible at the time. The "impossibility" wasn't just about the difficulty or ambition of achieving these dreams, but also the formidable obstacles posed by countless uncontrollable factors. More profoundly, it stemmed from a foresight into the direction this land needed to head, understanding that what seems impossible now holds the seeds of future possibility.
\\ A Dream to Heal the City - Can You See It? The Future of This City //
In 1897, Taiwan was ravaged by epidemic diseases, a "land of miasma" that Japanese officials desperately avoided. Civil engineer Hamano Yashiro, following his mentor William Barton, came to Taiwan to investigate water quality and plan for water supply and sewage systems, dedicating himself to surveying the land.
\\ A Dream to Build a Home - Promise Me You'll Send Me Back to My Real Home //
In 1911, a young London physician, David Landsborough, set aside a life of predictable comfort to fulfill his ideal of missionary work and medical practice. On his wedding day, he and his new wife embarked on a journey across the sea to a mysterious Eastern island, then a Japanese colony – Taiwan.
\\ A Dream of Freedom - One Must Know Their Past to See the Future //
Following the Marco Polo Bridge Incident on July 7, 1937, Taiwan entered a period of enforced Japanization, with strict surveillance creating social unrest. Wu Hsin-jung, who returned to Taiwan after studying medicine in Japan, led the development of literature in the salt-affected regions but faced repeated government suppression. He decided to visit his literary elder and fellow physician, Lai Ho.
