Triton shells are rare organic gemstones, as white and pure as jade, and also sacred Buddhist objects. Triton shells are the largest among marine shells, reaching diameters of up to 1.8m. The name "Triton shell" originated in the Han Dynasty; because the surface of its shell has radial grooves resembling ancient chariot tracks, it was originally called "che qu" (chariot track). Later generations, recognizing its hardness like stone, added the character for stone. Triton shells, pearls, coral, and amber are known in the West as the four great organic gemstones, and in Chinese Buddhism, they are revered as one of the Seven Treasures alongside gold, silver, lapis lazuli, agate, pearls, and amber.
Triton Shell Varieties:
They are classified into un-mineralized triton shells (porcelain white), semi-mineralized triton shells (milky white), fully mineralized triton shells (translucent white), yellow triton shells [often with cracks], blood triton shells, golden-veined triton shells, and patterned-veined triton shells, among others. Among these, patterned-veined triton shells, yellow triton shells, blood triton shells, and mineralized triton shells are the most precious. Some "mineralized" triton shells on the market are treated with chemical bleaches and do not reveal the shell's natural texture. Natural triton shells will never be exactly identical to one another.
Triton Shell Care Guide:
(1) Triton shells are organic gemstones primarily composed of calcium carbonate. Therefore, avoid prolonged exposure to acids. Clean regularly with clean water to maintain their luster.
(2) Do not expose to direct sunlight, as this can easily cause cracks.
(3) Applying oil periodically can help protect the shell.
