Shuifei Sand, Emperor Sand, Zijin Sand, and Crystal Sand are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**.
**「Shuifei Sand」**
**True red, with a slight orange undertone. The surface has a warm, matte finish that becomes brighter with wear, developing a patina over time.**
The production method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, letting it settle, and collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This is then allowed to settle again to purify (the water-floating method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then pressed using traditional methods. Fine, uniform mineral flashes can still be seen on the cross-section.
**「Emperor Sand」**
**The color leans towards true red, with a brighter hue and higher hardness.**
The production method involves purifying natural raw cinnabar ore through multiple processes including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-floating/high polishing**, followed by traditional pressing. Emperor Sand has almost no visible mineral flashes on the surface, but has them internally. The exterior is treated with a **high-polishing** process to achieve a metallic sheen, especially radiant under sunlight.
**「Zijin Sand」**
**The color is purplish-red, with slightly lower hardness than Emperor Sand.**
The production method involves multiple processes such as **crushing/grinding/screening** of natural raw cinnabar ore, but **without water-floating purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine and has scattered small mineral flashes, creating a "starry sky" effect.
**「Crystal Sand」**
**The color is purplish-red and translucent.**
Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from the cinnabar ore. Large crystal grains are clearly visible on the surface, appearing translucent under light and emitting a fluorescent red glow.
> Cinnabar
The earliest written records refer to cinnabar simply as "丹" (dān), a pictographic character. It depicted a mine shaft where minerals were extracted. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, indicating something extracted from a mine.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā) became known as cinnabar. "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregular granular minerals.
The color of cinnabar is permanent. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. Cinnabar is also a key ingredient in the "Eight Treasures Seal Paste," an essential pigment.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals infused with the essence of the sun and moon, absorbing the righteous energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a strong positive energy field. You may notice that jade feels cool to the touch, while cinnabar feels warm.
Historically, cinnabar has been indispensable in Taoist rituals for drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil, and pacifying negative energies. It has always been considered a supreme item for improving luck, warding off misfortune, repelling evil spirits, attracting blessings, and inviting wealth, carrying auspicious meanings of great fortune, prosperity, and well-being.
For those living in modern times, owning a piece of cinnabar art can also be a way to cultivate oneself, soothing the eyes and the heart.
> Care Instructions
1. Avoid Corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and does not dissolve in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals like soap and shower gel can cause corrosion.
2. Avoid Contact with Metals
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, leading to irreversible darkening or blackening.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercuric sulfide component in cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, simply avoid exposing cinnabar jewelry to high-temperature environments for safe wear.
4. How to Clean
If your cinnabar appears dirty, do not soak it in water, as this can alter its original luster! Gently wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and allow it to air dry.
5. Oiling for Preservation
Apply a thin layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the stone surface to absorb the oil and become more lustrous and clear. After oiling, seal it in a brocade box, perhaps wrapped in plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the box lining.
6. Frequent Handling
Regularly handle your cinnabar jewelry while wearing it. This allows the surface to absorb a thin layer of natural oils, enhancing its antique and elegant appearance over time.
