The tiger talisman is a metal tiger-shaped troop deployment certificate originating from China. Legend has it that it was invented by Jiang Ziya of the Western Zhou Dynasty. It was a symbol of military power in the ancient Chinese emperor system. The tiger talisman is issued by the central government to the general in charge of the army. There is an inscription on the back and it is divided into two halves. The right half is kept in the court, and the left half is issued to the commander-in-chief or local governor. When deploying troops, the two halves need to be matched with the inscription to take effect. The tiger talisman is specialized for special purposes, and each army has a corresponding tiger talisman. In history, there have been many major changes in the shape, quantity, inscriptions and status of tiger talismans. From the Han Dynasty to the Sui Dynasty, tiger talismans were generally made of Bronze, but there were also tiger talismans made of Silver, gold or even jade. The inscriptions on both sides of the Tiger Talisman riding seam are from the right. During the Sui Dynasty, the military talisman was changed to the Lin talisman. In the Tang Dynasty, the tiger was tabooed because the ancestor's name was Li Hu, so fish talisman or rabbit talisman was used instead. Later, turtle talisman and even ox talisman were used. In the Southern Song Dynasty, the use of tiger charms was resumed, but gold medals were also used, such as recalling Yue Fei's twelve gold medals. The Yuan Dynasty used the tiger head medal, and later generations used it as the bronze medal.
This pair of tiger talismans are all patinated and moist, full of precious light. The patina is irregularly distributed on the surface of the tiger talismans, exuding traces of a long history. They should be antique works from the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.
