Product Description

Hand-drawn botanical illustration · Honey Mushroom · digital download (no physical item is shipped) I drew the honey mushroom as it actually grows — in a crowded tuft rather than alone — because the cluster is the whole point of it. Honey-coloured caps rise in handfuls from the base of stumps and living trees, each on a ringed stem, each pushing against the next for space, the whole group tilting slightly outward toward the light. You rarely find a single one; you find thirty, or a hundred, or after autumn rain a whole slope alive with them, so dense you step over the outer edge and lose count of the caps at forty. What you cannot draw is the part underground. A single colony of Armillaria mellea can spread for kilometres through the soil as dark, root-like rhizomorphs — fruiting in hundreds of places at once, living for potentially thousands of years. Some of the largest living organisms ever measured have been honey fungi: the Malheur National Forest specimen in Oregon covers nearly ten square kilometres and is estimated to be several thousand years old. The modest cluster you find at the base of a stump is the visible edge of something that may have been growing since before any tree currently standing was a seed. Its mycelium is also bioluminescent: it glows faintly in the dark with the greenish light called foxfire, or fairy fire — the old name for the unexplained light occasionally seen in old woodland at night. Some accounts say travellers used it as a makeshift lantern in dark forests. The cap above ground gives no hint of this. I drew the cluster close and dense, the caps overlapping, the honey colour deepening toward the edge of each one. I wanted the pile of them to feel genuinely heavy. SPECIMEN NOTES - **Honey mushroom (Armillaria mellea)** — widespread, clustered edible fungus; one of the world's most common wood-decay organisms - **Cap:** pale honey-yellow to brown, 3–10 cm, often **finely scaled at the centre**; darker at centre, paler at margin - **Stem:** slender, with a **white fibrous ring**; pale above the ring, darker and fibrous below - **Growth:** in **dense clustered tufts** from stumps, roots and living wood; rarely solitary - **Underground:** its rhizomorphs spread for **kilometres through the soil** — colonies rank among the largest living organisms on Earth by area - **Bioluminescence:** its mycelium emits a **faint greenish glow** in the dark — the old "foxfire" of forest folklore - **Season:** late summer through late autumn; found throughout the northern hemisphere - **Edibility:** edible when **thoroughly cooked** — raw or undercooked specimens cause gastric distress - **Ecology:** significant tree pathogen and decomposer; both kills living trees and breaks down dead wood ON THE WALL, OR AS A GIFT At home this print suits a woodland or cottagecore room, a dark-academia study stacked with field guides, a naturalist's shelves, or a kitchen that leans rustic and autumnal. The honey tones are warm and hold well against dark panelling, aged plaster or pale linen. In a dark oak or walnut frame it reads as a plate from a serious mycology handbook. In a pale birch frame it takes on a more Scandinavian quality. It pairs well with the Chanterelle and Porcini prints from this collection for a kitchen wall that also functions as a small field guide to the autumn forest. As a gift it is for the person who stops on a walk to turn a log over and see what is underneath, or who knows that the faint light occasionally visible in old woods at night comes from the ground. It makes a considered birthday present or housewarming gift for a mushroom lover, a forager, or anyone as interested in what is happening below the surface as above it. The instant download means it can be purchased and sent anywhere in the world the same day. Complete your purchase 2. Download the files instantly from your Pinkoi order page — no shipping, no waiting 3. Save to your phone, tablet or computer 4. Print at home, at a print lab, or at a convenience-store multifunction printer — 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and Lawson in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan handle these files cleanly 5. Frame and hang PRINTING RECOMMENDATIONS **Best result: matte or semi-gloss paper.** Matte is closest to the feel of the original illustration — the texture reads as hand-drawn rather than digital. Semi-gloss gives slightly richer colour and more contrast. Paper weight: **200 gsm or heavier** for a fine-art feel. Standard 80–90 gsm office paper works fine for a casual print or a test before committing to a frame. For exceptional quality, look for a local print lab that offers cotton-rag or baryta paper at 240+ gsm — botanical illustration on fine-art paper is close to the look and weight of an original drawing. The files are sized to print cleanly at both metric (A-series) and US standard sizes without any adjustment. Take the PDF to any print shop and ask for it printed at 100% scale. SIZE GUIDE - **A5** — 14.8 × 21 cm / 5.8 × 8.3 in — desk frame, shelf, or small accent wall - **A4** — 21 × 29.7 cm / 8.3 × 11.7 in — the most popular size; standard frames everywhere - **A3** — 29.7 × 42 cm / 11.7 × 16.5 in — gallery scale; makes a clear statement on a wall - **A2** — 42 × 59.4 cm / 16.5 × 23.4 in — large format; feature walls and wide corridors - **8 × 10 in** (20 × 25 cm) — US standard; sits well with a mat in an 11 × 14 in frame - **11 × 14 in** (28 × 35.5 cm) — US gallery size; fills a standard frame without a mat All sizes print at full 600 DPI sharpness. There is no resolution loss at larger sizes. DISPLAY IDEAS - Natural wood frame for a warm, botanical feel — black frame for a more graphic, modern look - A single print beside a window or above a shelf in a kitchen - Two or three drawings in matching frames, side by side, along a corridor or bedroom wall - Part of a gallery wall: botanical prints sit well alongside maps, photographs and typography - Standing in a clip frame or thin acrylic on a shelf or desk, without a wall mount GIFT IDEAS A framed botanical art print is a considered gift for a housewarming, birthday, anniversary, Mother's Day, or Teacher's Day — for anyone who loves plants, cooking, nature, or botanical illustration. It arrives by instant download, which makes it easy to give at short notice: purchase, forward the file, done. FROM THE STUDIO Every drawing begins with biological study and close observation — the scientific name, the structure, the feature that makes this species itself. The work follows the tradition of European botanical illustration, where science and art are the same act. From a studio in northern Italy, near Lake Como.
