Šakotis means "Tree Cake" because of its unique shape (usually conical, resembling the branches of a pine tree) and the presence of "tree rings" inside. Making a Tree Cake is a time-consuming and labor-intensive baking process that involves layering batter on a rotating spit in a special open oven or over an open flame. It is not only delicious but can also be used to decorate with chocolate and flowers. Šakotis is one of the most important desserts in Lithuania, especially during celebrations such as weddings or major holidays like Easter or Christmas. In 2006, it was even chosen as Lithuania's representative candy in the Café Europe initiative hosted by Austria on European Day.
