Workshop Description

The culture of incense appreciation (Xiangdao) originated in the Tang Dynasty and reached its zenith during the Song Dynasty. Scholars and refined individuals incorporated it into their daily lives to cultivate an elegant atmosphere for literary gatherings, creating a multi-sensory experience that delights the eyes, the nose, and the soul. Incense appreciation transcends simple sensory pleasure; it encompasses the art of fragrance connoisseurship and the aesthetics of the incense ceremony, ultimately guiding the mind toward a state of tranquility and peace. Different types of incense require unique methods of use, each adding its own distinct ambiance to the setting and unfolding a unique incense ceremony aesthetic. Four common forms of Agarwood incense appreciation are stick incense, coil incense, fragrant incense, and incense 篆 (Xiang Zhuan). Xiang Zhuan, also known as incense seals or incense impressions, was originally used in temples for timekeeping. The mold used to pack the incense powder, shaped like seal script, is specifically designed for this purpose. In the process of creating Xiang Zhuan, you will use a spoon to carefully fill the mold with incense powder, pressing it into your chosen seal script or floral pattern. Once lit, the incense slowly burns along the lines. As you enjoy the elegant aroma of the Agarwood, you can observe each spoonful of powder, meticulously pressed with a calm heart, as it burns away in silence. ༄༄༄ In this course, we will introduce the practice of incense 篆 (Xiang Zhuan), explore its enduring history and culture, and learn how to transform the precious natural resource of Agarwood into a feast for the eyes and the senses through a mindful daily ritual. ------ 【Small Group Instruction】 Our experience classes are taught in small groups.
