This temoku tea jar incorporated the skills of the wheel and also hand building techniques.
The clay body is a Japanese red clay. I applied a tenmoku glaze and soda fired the jar in the mountains of Taiwan. The glaze finish has a combination of black, amber, and green tinges. It is a particularly beautiful glaze and the soda also rose its presence to a greater level.
I made this jar to be used for someone who wanted to store their high quality tea in. Of course it could be used for a variety of objects as well.
The handle is a special feature. I hand built this in a typical Japanese style water basket handle. While travelling through Japan I was drawn to these ancient water buckets and their handles.
My seal is stamped inside the lid.
