And also, a unique natural grassy fragrance~
Hailing from central Taiwan, this unique plant, Taiwanese cattail grass, possesses a captivating natural aroma.
Historically, cattail grass was primarily used for weaving mats, hence its nickname "Mat Grass." It is highly absorbent, breathable, and gentle on the skin. Touching it provides a cool sensation, and with prolonged use, it develops a richer sheen, embodying a sense of lived experience.
Taiwan boasts nearly three hundred years of cattail grass weaving culture. Each item is meticulously handwoven by local grandmothers and aunts, imbued with the full spirit of Taiwan.
**|| Cattail Grass Weaving Process ||**
Growth | 3-4 months of cultivation
Sun-drying | Approximately 2-4 months of sun-drying after harvest to completely remove moisture.
Grass Sorting | Categorizing grass by length and removing partial tips.
Grass Selection | Choosing uniformly thick grass before weaving.
Root Cleaning | Removing unsprouted leaves from the grass roots.
Grass Hammering | Breaking down the grass structure to soften it for easier weaving.
For finer items, two additional steps are involved: "Grass Splitting" (further dividing the triangular cattail grass into two to three segments) and "Grass Kneading" (rubbing to remove the white fibers within the grass).
**|| A Little Story About Taiwanese Cattail Grass ||**
Grandmothers and mothers used to tell stories about how people would cultivate grass.
They favored the "black gold" hue of cattail grass,
which typically developed with prolonged use.
However, some would accelerate this transformation by wiping the grass with tea water,
to deepen its color.
