The "Swastika" symbol, commonly found in Buddhist artifacts, is generally pronounced "Wan" (萬). According to the ancient Agamas Sutra, it is described as the sixteenth of the thirty-two marks of a great man, adorning the Buddha's chest.
In reality, the swastika symbol predates Buddhism, originating in India where it is known as "Swastika," a compound of "Su" (auspicious) and "Asati" (to be), signifying a symbol of good fortune. As Buddhism spread to China, the swastika symbol traveled with it. However, translating this symbol posed a challenge. Masters like Kumarajiva and Xuanzang translated it as "De" (德, virtue), while Bodhiruci, in his "Dandabhakti Sastra," rendered it as "Wan" (萬), signifying the perfection of myriad virtues. During Empress Wu Zetian's reign, the pronunciation and meaning of the symbol were officially established as "Wan" (萬), embodying the concept of "the convergence of auspiciousness and myriad virtues." In Chinese Buddhist texts, the right-facing swastika is more prevalent. However, there are differing opinions on whether the symbol is inherently left or right-facing. Regardless, in Buddhism, both the right and left-facing orientations are used to symbolize the Buddha's infinite wisdom and compassion, representing the boundless power of the Buddha to deliver immeasurable sentient beings across all realms.
