This is a charming and heartwarming tenugui handkerchief featuring flowers and animals, dyed using the traditional "Chusen" technique with "Chita-momen" cotton, which is woven in the Chita region, the local area of torisun.
The subtle color variations and gradations characteristic of "Chusen" dyeing enhance the simple charm of the animals. You'll find bears, rabbits, and even Gon the Fox, a famous character from the tales of Niimi Nankichi, a renowned author from Handu City, torisun's hometown.
Available in two colors, "Wavering Blue" and "Wavering Pink," this page features the "Wavering Pink" design.
Chita-momen has been woven with care in Chita, unchanged through time.
This makes for a thoughtful small gift or celebratory present.
[Commitment to Materials]
Chita-momen is the general name for cotton fabrics woven in the Chita region of Aichi Prefecture.
Its history is long, having been woven in this land for 400 years.
Even today, it continues to support Japan's traditional beauty as a major textile-producing region loved not only in Japan but also around the world.
The fabric is woven on shuttle looms dating back to the Meiji era or equivalent. Because the fabric is woven slowly, production volume is not high, but this gentle process creates a unique, soft texture without stressing the material. Furthermore, the perfectly straight selvedge edges are both durable and supple, and the fabric surface is exceptionally beautiful.
