◎Coconut, also known as "ya", the coconut stem is the part where the coconut connects to the tree. Each coconut has only one stem, and one stem can yield approximately 1-2 "coconut stem beads." Buddhist prayer beads made from coconut shell have existed since the Tang and Song dynasties, with documented records from the Qing dynasty, and have long been favored in Han and Tibetan Buddhism. In the Qing dynasty, they were referred to as "Muya," "Yet," and "Manguan."
Coconut stems and shells develop a darker, more lustrous patina with use, becoming resistant to sweat and easy to polish. If they appear black and lustrous upon purchase, without any brown lines or pores, and look solid black under light, they may have been dyed or treated with oil.
