Jiao-tai Ceramic Plate — Axle Silk - Plates & Trays - Porcelain Gray

Product Description

"Jiao-tai," meaning a combination of different clays, refers to the technique where each color within the ceramic piece is a distinct type of clay. These colored clays are kneaded into long strips or rolled into flat sheets, then arranged into columnar shapes according to various patterns, resembling fish cakes or sushi rolls. After slicing vertically, multiple cross-sections are assembled together. They are then flattened by patting and rolling before being shaped into vessels. Once semi-dry, the pieces are trimmed and bisque fired at 850 degrees Celsius. The bisque ware is then sanded with sandpaper, coated with a thin transparent glaze, and fired at a high temperature of 1230 degrees Celsius. Because the pieces are made using the jiao-tai technique, patterns appear on both sides of the vessel. Furthermore, the patterns become deformed, exhibiting twists or flowing appearances due to the flattening and shaping processes before the vessel is formed. This is the unique effect of the jiao-tai technique, creating a lively and engaging aesthetic. As tableware, these pieces bring an element of joy to the dining table and meals, adding interest to daily life. Vessels with different color combinations, shapes, and patterns, adorned with sweets, fresh fruits, or fine cuisine, make every day a delightful occasion.
