There are many temples in Hong Kong that worship different gods, such as Wong Tai Sin, Che Kung Temple, Man Mo Temple, etc. Among them, the temple with the largest number is the Hou Tian Hou Temple.
Tin Hau, also known as "Mazu", is said to be a god who provides protection for ships at sea. Hong Kong is surrounded by the sea on three sides. Most of the early Hong Kong residents lived on fishing. Therefore, Hong Kong was also one of the earliest places where Tin Hau worship was introduced.
There are 102 existing independent temples with Tin Hau as the main god in Hong Kong, nearly half of which have been listed as statutory monuments. The oldest one is the Tin Hau Temple in Fung Chi Village, Ping Shan, Yuen Long, estimated to be built in 1684. It has a history of more than three hundred years.
You may be wondering, since the Tianhou Temple is mainly to bless the safety of various seas, why are many of the Tianhou Temples you see now located inland? This is because many years of reclamation development in Hong Kong have made many Tin Hau Temples originally built on the seashore far away from the current coastline. Therefore, many Tin Hau Temples in Hong Kong also witness the development of Hong Kong.
