It was named Batavia at the time, and the Dutch East India Company was established here. In 1799, the East India Company was disbanded and taken over by the Dutch government. The flora part was compiled by Dutch botanist Pieter Willem Korthals (1807/1892). From 1831 to 1836, Kotas served as the official botanist of the Dutch East Indies.
