Spanish Antique, Damascene 24K/Sterling Silver Inlay, 3D Blue-Eyed Butterfly Filigree Brooch

▰▰▰▰▰▰Damascene▰▰▰▰▰▰ Spanish Damascene ware, a metal inlay technique, can be traced back over 2,000 years to Damascus, the capital of Syria. It was later introduced to the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) in the early 8th century with the Moorish invasions, and at the same time, it traveled to Japan via the Silk Road. The Moors, who were Arabs from Asia and North Africa, practiced Islam. They were collectively known as "los moros" (the Moors) and also as "los musulmanes" (the Muslims) at the time. For over 300 years after their invasion, they ruled a large part of Spain. Even after being driven out of central Spain, they maintained a prosperous presence in the Andalusia region of southern Iberia for more than three centuries. After nearly 8 centuries of rule, they were finally expelled in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, completing the country's unification. Although the Arab kingdom had vanished, it profoundly influenced Spanish culture in various aspects, leaving behind a wealth of precious heritage. The process involves creating a base metal, typically iron or a copper alloy, on which fine lines are etched. Thin sheets of pure gold and silver are then used to form intricate patterns, which are hammered and inlaid into the etched lines. A process of lacquering and firing follows to prevent oxidation and rust of the base metal.
