Description:
In the late Ming period, collectors particularly favored Xuande blue-and-white porcelain, followed by Chenghua kiln's polychrome ware, which referred to Doucai porcelain at the time. Among the Palace Museum's collection of Chenghua Doucai wares, the decoration on cups is the most diverse, including grape-patterned cups, infant play cups, lofty figure cups, flower and bird-patterned high-footed cups, and the renowned chicken cup. In Cheng Zhe's "Rong Chazhi Shuo" at the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, Cheng Zhe specifically pointed out that the Chenghua Doucai chicken cup was particularly noteworthy, even having a value of "ten thousand for a pair" during the reign of Emperor Shen Zong of the Ming Dynasty. This small cup features an extravagant mouth, short walls, a flat bottom, and a shallow ring foot. The outer wall is vividly painted with two scenes of roosters and hens each carrying three chicks, separated by rose and orchid clusters, with green lines delineating the rim and base. The interior is pure white with no decorative patterns. The bottom bears a Chenghua blue-and-white regular script mark that reads "Made during the Chenghua era of the Great Ming."
