Formosan Mountain Dog
During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, the poet Zhu Shijie once described the Taiwanese dog in "Xiaoliuqiu Manzhi": "The dog is as big as a yellow calf and has a different bark. Its ears are cut, covered with vegetation, and have many hooks and thorns. There is no trouble in galloping... When hunting roe deer, you will never miss a single one."
The Taiwan Dog was once known as the Takasa Dog or the Taiwan Native Dog. It is a descendant of South Asian hunting dogs. It is alert by nature and adapted to Taiwan's changing terrain. It was first used as a hunting dog by the aborigines.
Due to Taiwan's early lack of awareness of dog breeds and the fact that it was once subject to foreign colonial rule, dog breeds introduced from abroad were bred with Taiwanese dogs, gradually diluting the blood characteristics of Taiwanese dogs and making this Taiwan's representative dog breed For a time it disappeared from the stage of history. A Taiwanese and Japanese academic team conducted a comprehensive investigation in the mountainous area in the 1980s, and finally tracked down several Taiwanese dogs that reached first-level purity, and then resumed breeding. In 2015, the World Canine Federation held a global member conference in Italy and voted to recognize the "Taiwan Dog" as one of the emerging dog breeds and officially changed its name to "Taiwan Dog".
