Late 2024, just before preparing for a business trip to Korea, a sudden lockdown was announced. It was lifted just before the plane's departure, allowing us to reach Korea safely. However, upon arrival, we found ourselves unexpectedly trapped in a subway car. Protesters kept flooding in, pushing us until we could barely breathe and move. We were nearly suspended in the air. All we could think was, "What do we do? Will this turn into a stampede?" We kept encouraging each other to stay calm, find ways to breathe, keep our heads up, and most importantly, stand firm to avoid falling. Thankfully, after a few stops, the overwhelming crowd disembarked at Yeouido Station, and we were left trembling and tearful. A few stops later, as we exited the subway, we unexpectedly stumbled upon Hyejin's exhibition. The cats' languid and serene postures instantly calmed the tumultuous storm we had just experienced. We, still shaken and dazed, felt as though we had found solid ground again. From the bottom of our hearts, we truly feel: it's wonderful to have cats in this world. Hyejin's cat artworks are such treasures. And so, this unforeseen collaboration came to be. 🤍 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791025978_c361304614_c.jpg Hyejin's style merges modern sensibilities with traditional Korean techniques, developed through slow, deliberate creation and hand-painting. We are deeply fond of the nostalgic, retro feel in his works, reminiscent of the folk painting scrolls from Korea's Joseon Dynasty. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923222_46ac7b4975_c.jpg Every stroke meticulously outlines incredibly detailed elements, creating pieces that invite prolonged admiration. Creating art with traditional Korean craftsmanship requires immense patience. The artist applies delicate layers of color, building rich textures and deep, saturated hues. Even a small butterfly or grasshopper is rendered with exquisite detail and soul. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791008469_5cfdb8271f_c.jpg Each painting captures moments where cats share our space. The cats' "unhurried" and "quietly present" demeanor conveys the message the artist wishes to communicate. Hyejin frequently holds solo exhibitions in Korea and has been creating art for over a decade. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791102340_09288edf64_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923372_b9e7b97b2c_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923357_30bd7feac8_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923327_ebb7b5d094_b.jpg Hyejin primarily uses his own cats as his muses, depicting them as both mischievous and sharp-eyed, embodying a perfectly "fierce yet cute" personality. There's a captivating blend of conflict and harmony, a seamless fusion of tradition and modernity. By incorporating contemporary artistic styles and characters, he portrays animal life and thoughts within traditional art. He utilizes Korean paper, less commonly seen in the market, and detailed brushwork (Gongbi) techniques. This paper lends the overall artwork a warm, gentle tone, while the fine Gongbi lines add exquisite detail and depth. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791008479_1a3b230ced_c.jpg This warm feeling, this unique combination, allows the contemporary painting style to integrate harmoniously.
