| Tu Chung-Kao
Calligraphy is not imitation; it is the manifestation of life.
From a farm boy to an internationally acclaimed calligrapher, Tu Chung-Kao has forged his own artistic path with steadfastness and focus. He believes that even those from illiterate backgrounds can carve out their value through characters if they harbor a love for words. In his early years, Tu studied Northern Steles under Wang Kai, and later became a disciple of Wang Chuang-hsi, one of the "Seven Disciples of Wang." His foundation in calligraphy is profound. Having studied landscape painting with Fu Chien-fu, although he later focused on calligraphy, the training in composition and spatial awareness is deeply ingrained in his work. Subsequently, he visited renowned calligraphers, seeking advice from Wang Pei-yue, Hsieh Tsung-an, and Yao Meng-ku. Under Wang Pei-yue's recommendation, he studied seal script with the master Hsi Nan-hsun, gradually refining his techniques and comprehending the subtleties of the calligraphic way.
In 1977, Tu Chung-Kao met Master Nan Huai-Chin and delved into Buddhist studies and Zen meditation. From then on, his creative vision expanded beyond technical refinement to embody life philosophy. He transformed "calligraphy" into a form of spiritual practice, observing the self and reflecting the universe in every stroke. His characters are not just words; they are the flow of the mind, the pulse of the spirit.
Tu Chung-Kao is not merely a calligrapher but a "happy living" practitioner who embodies life philosophy through writing. He has never placed art in an ivory tower, but rather, with a sincere heart and practical brush, he delves into the depths of life, writing chapters that belong to the era and to himself.
