From a farmer's child to an internationally renowned calligrapher, Tu Chung-Kao has forged his own path in the art of calligraphy with steadfastness and focus. He believes that even from an environment of illiteracy, one can carve out the value of self-existence between brush and ink, as long as they embrace a love for language. Early in his career, Tu studied Northern steles under Wang Kai-He, later apprenticing with Wang Chuang-Tse, becoming one of the "Seven Disciples of Wang," possessing a deep foundation in calligraphy. He also studied landscape painting with Fu Chien-Fu. Though he later focused on calligraphy, the training in composition and spatial awareness is deeply embedded in his works. Subsequently, he visited renowned calligraphers, seeking guidance from figures like Wang Pei-Yueh, Hsieh Tsung-An, and Yao Meng-Ku. Under Wang Pei-Yueh's recommendation, he further honed his skills by studying seal script with the master Hsi Nan-Hsun, gradually refining his techniques and comprehending the subtleties of the calligraphic way. In 1977, Tu Chung-Kao met Master Nan Huai-Chin, engaging in in-depth study of Buddhism and Zen contemplation. From then on, his creative vision expanded beyond the mere refinement of technique to embodying life philosophy. He transformed "calligraphy" into a form of spiritual practice, observing the self and reflecting the universe within each stroke. His characters are not just words; they are the flow of the mind, the pulse of the spirit. Tu Chung-Kao is not merely a calligrapher but a "LOHAS" individual who practices life philosophy through writing.
