■ About Amethyst
Keywords: Sincerity, Peace of Mind, Intuition, February Birthstone
Its Japanese name is Murasaki-suisho. It is one of the oldest gemstones.
It holds the romantic epithet of 'guardian stone of love' and 'stone that protects love.' In Japan, purple has been used since ancient times in rituals and decorations as a color of the highest status. In Greek mythology, amethyst was the name of a lady-in-waiting to the moon goddess, and it was described as the embodiment of a beautiful maiden.
In Christianity, it is still used in rituals today as the stone for bishops' rings.
The etymology means 'not getting drunk.' It is said to signify not losing reason or nobility at any time.
[Bonus Column: Amethyst, the Color Purple, and Humanity]
Mineralogically, amethyst belongs to the quartz group, which does not have the highest hardness. So why has it been cherished as a color and treasure of the highest class in ancient civilizations worldwide for thousands of years?
Purple is the ultimate color among all colors. In both Japan and Europe, royalty, nobles, and high-ranking priests wore purple, and its use by people of other ranks was strictly forbidden.
It was the color symbolizing Roman emperors, and Byzantine empresses gave birth in the purple chamber. It was used in religious ceremonies in Maya and Aztec civilizations and as the color of nobility in China. Why? One reason is that stable purple dyes were obtained from a chemical reaction with a secretion called 'purpura' from the hypobranchial gland of Murex sea snails, making it an ultra-luxurious dye that could only be obtained in very small quantities. 250,000 snails were needed to obtain just 30g of dye. Ancient Phoenicia, which is modern-day Lebanon, was a producer of these shells, leading to a city name meaning 'land of purple.'
