| Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai's "Sudden Shower Over Shinagawa" from the Library of Congress collection.
Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese: 葛飾 北斎 / かつしか ほくさい; October 31, 1760 – May 10, 1849), born Nakajima Tokitaro, was born in Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1760 and was a leading Ukiyo-e artist during Japan's late Edo period, a representative figure of Japan's Bunka-Kei era culture. He began studying woodblock printing at age 14 and apprenticed under the Ukiyo-e artist Katsukawa Shunsho at 18, embarking on a long and prolific artistic career. In 1826, to coincide with the burgeoning domestic tourism in Japan and his personal deep affection for Mt. Fuji, Hokusai created the series of landscape prints "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," which brought him widespread fame. Among this series, "Fine Wind, Clear Morning" and "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" are the most renowned. His daughter, Katsushika Ōi, was also a renowned painter. Hokusai was adopted by a mirror polisher and grew up in the Katsushika village in eastern Edo. In his youth, he worked as a delivery boy for a lending library. In his spare time, he studied painting and illustrations, learning from artists such as Katsukawa Shunsho and Tawaraya Sōri. He began publishing his works at age 19 and passed away at the age of 90, with an estimated lifetime output of around 35,000 works.
