[Synopsis]
In 2021, *Korean Screen* invited over 158 professional film critics from 28 countries to vote for the "Top 100 Korean Films of All Time." *Parasite* ranked second, while Lee Chang-dong's *Burning*, *Poetry*, and *Peppermint Candy* secured the first, eighth, and ninth positions respectively within the top 10!
Before becoming a filmmaker, he was a novelist. This collection, *Burning Paper*, comprises 11 short stories written between 1983 and 1987, a period when Korea endured immense hardship, including the Gwangju Uprising, and faced repeated student movements and democratic protests. Lee Chang-dong wove grand historical narratives and the lives of ordinary people into his fiction, choosing literature as his medium to document the "era."
His stories depict the submerged and often forgotten aspects of life beneath tumultuous currents, capturing the most authentic experiences of ordinary citizens. Lee Chang-dong pursued realism in his fiction, employing a compassionate literary lens that not only poses questions but continuously explores avenues for resolution, much like his films. These 11 poignant short stories are akin to 11 micro-films etched into the heart.
Literary creation differs from historical record. History aims to reveal, while literature conceals, embedding its core message deep within the soil like roots, destined to sprout flowers that even the author, you, and I could never have anticipated.
How does one live as a human within a zoo of lost souls?
