"The Book of Rites: The Chapter on the Grand Course" (禮記·禮運大同篇): "When the Great Tao is practiced, the world is shared by all. The worthy and the capable are chosen, and sincerity and harmony are cultivated. Thus, people do not merely care for their own parents and children; they ensure the elderly have a comfortable old age, that the able-bodied have employment, and that the young are well-provided for. The widowed, the orphaned, the childless, the sick, and the disabled are all cared for. Men have their duties, and women have their homes. Wealth is loathed to be left unused, though not necessarily kept for oneself. Effort is loathed to be withheld, though not necessarily for personal gain. Therefore, schemes will not be hatched and will not succeed. Thievery, robbery, and rebellion will not occur. Thus, outer doors will remain unlocked. This is called the Grand Course (Datong)." This passage depicts Confucius's ideal vision of the highest political and social order. Contemporary calligrapher and painter, Master Chu Chen-Nan, integrates cursive script into his painting, using Taiwan's highest peak, Mount Jade (Yushan), as the ultimate spiritual symbol. This creates a tri-fold brochure that is both magnificent in its grandeur and imbued with a sense of peace.
