With a ring of yellowish-white stripes around the outer edge of its head, its face appears distinctly heart-shaped, resembling a monkey's face at first glance, earning it the nickname "monkey-faced owl." Among the known owls in Taiwan, it is the only species that does not inhabit forests, preferring grasslands in foothills and hills.
