Urushi Lacquer
What is lacquerware, and what is its value?
Urushi, also known as raw lacquer, national lacquer, or natural lacquer, is broadly referred to as Chinese lacquer.
It is a natural resin coating, a white, viscous emulsion that flows from the bark of the lacquer tree, processed into a paint.
Natural urushi is globally recognized as the "King of Coatings."
Urushi is profound, understated, rich, and elegant, making it exceptionally rare.
As a poem once praised: "Raw lacquer, pure as oil, its treasure light illuminates the head;
It stirs with tiger-stripe hues, and lifts like a fishing hook; sinking three-tenths of an inch deep, its luster forever remains." This describes the physical properties of urushi, its resistance to corrosion and permeation.
