This is “Fukusuke,” a Black Shiba Inu daruma handcrafted by an artisan from a long-established daruma workshop in Takasaki City, Gunma, Japan. With a bright, full smile that welcomes you home, Fukusuke was created to be a cheerful presence that gently accompanies your space. ■ Materials & Craftsmanship Fukusuke is made using traditional papier-mâché techniques, primarily from paper materials such as newspaper. In Japan, there is a cultural practice called Otakiage, in which daruma dolls are respectfully burned after fulfilling their purpose. Normally, non-burnable parts must be removed beforehand. However, Fukusuke’s face, ears, and tail are all made of paper, allowing it to be sent off as is. The base is made from the same clay material used in traditional daruma dolls. The surface is carefully layered with gofun (traditional white pigment), resulting in a matte and rustic texture. ■ Size & Materials Size: Approx.
