Workshop Description

**** After registering, please log in to Pinkoi the following day to check your messages. We will send you the class confirmation details. **** **** If you register as a single participant, you may be paired with another student. If you prefer a private, one-on-one session without other participants, please select the two-person registration option. **** **** Our course aims to guide students with little to no prior perfumery experience in creating a genuine perfume they will wear daily. We don't simply provide ingredients for self-exploration. The small class setting is designed to allow the instructor to guide you step-by-step in discovering your desired scent and crafting your signature fragrance. **** **** If you've previously attempted to create perfumes with essential oils but found they didn't capture the essence of commercial fragrances, this class will provide the clarity you seek. **** **** The course duration is approximately 4 hours. **** **** We also offer a 3-hour perfumery course: **** https://www.pinkoi.com/product/FnkFP8CL **** The 4-hour course features a wider range of professional ingredients and allows for more in-depth explanations of perfumery principles. It also provides ample time to meticulously craft your perfume. If your goal is simply to experience perfume creation, the 3-hour course is suitable. However, if you have a keen interest in perfumery and wish to deepen your knowledge, the 4-hour course is ideal. Both courses include lecture notes and scent charts to take home. **** **** If you are deeply interested in professional perfumery or aromatherapy, we welcome you to join this course. It can significantly reduce the time spent on self-discovery. **** **** If you are fascinated by perfumes but find terms like violet, iris, mimosa, galbanum (the main note in Chanel No. 19), oakmoss, tonka bean, and clary sage in fragrance descriptions confusing, this course is for you. We guarantee you'll understand fragrance notes like a pro afterward. **** **** This class covers a vast array of ingredients and perfumery knowledge, so please ensure you have a genuine interest in perfumery or aromatherapy before registering! **** **** The ingredients we use are genuine perfumery materials, not unidentified compound fragrances. **** **** Commercial perfumes primarily utilize synthetic ingredients (synthetics/isolates). Natural ingredients typically constitute less than 30% of the composition (the proportion of natural ingredients is directly related to the perfume's price). **** **** For more perfumery insights, search for the instructor's blog: "A Perfumer's Daily Practice" (on Vocus). **** **Course Content:** If you are interested in professional perfumery, this is a course you won't want to miss. We provide approximately **80 types** of natural essential oils and absolutes, including rare and precious professional perfumery ingredients such as: Violet Leaf, Orris Root, Blackcurrant Bud, Oakmoss, Tonka Bean, Labdanum, Jasmine, Neroli, and Rose Absolute... Additionally, we offer around **30 types** of synthetic ingredients/isolates (e.g., Hedione, Iso E Super, Ambroxan, Oud Base, Helvetolide, Beta Damascone, Calone...), explaining the differences and perfumery effects of natural versus synthetic ingredients. You can choose whether to incorporate synthetics. Using synthetic ingredients can achieve the light, transparent, and radiant qualities found in commercial perfumes. The approximately **4-hour** course allows you to create your own **30ml** signature perfume under the guidance of the instructor. During the class, you will learn about the scent layers of essential oils and perfumes, as well as the knowledge and techniques of perfume composition (not massage oils or scented candles~ Perfumery is the most advanced and esteemed field within scent creation). This will save you considerable time and effort in self-discovery. This is a professional perfumery course. The primary ingredients are precious essential oils and absolutes. We welcome students passionate about perfume composition. **The longevity of the perfumes created in this course is approximately 4-6 hours. They are designed to uplift your mood and promote relaxation when worn. The scent is pleasant even after prolonged wear and does not cause dizziness. It also serves as an excellent Pillow Perfume, aiding sleep.** **Fee Includes:** Each participant will create and take home their own **30ml** perfume (as pictured). **Class Flow:** **1. **Experience and learn about over 100 commonly used and rare precious ingredients. Gain in-depth understanding of each ingredient's background, olfactory profile, aromatherapy benefits, and perfumery recommendations. **2. **Begin experimenting to create your first version of a unique personal fragrance. **3. **Imagine the atmosphere and narrative you wish your perfume to convey, then evaluate your creation. **4. **Engage in discussions with the instructor and fellow students. The instructor will provide professional perfumery guidance and suggestions, minimizing trial-and-error and significantly enhancing your perfumery skills. **5. **Repeatedly refine your perfume version, potentially creating over 20 different iterations. **6. **Finally, select your most satisfying version. The instructor will guide you on how to compose your **30ml** natural perfume based on your scent formula. **7. **Enjoy a fulfilling and delightful afternoon, taking home your personalized fragrance. **Instructor Profile:** **1. **Founder & Perfumer, Faith Parfum Atelier **2. **Professional Perfumer **3. **Author of the professional perfumery blog "A Perfumer's Daily Practice" **4. **Professional Tea Ceremony and Art Instructor **5. **Freelance Cultural Photographer **6. **Winner of the 2018 New Taipei City Hakka Creative Product Award **7. **Professional Instructor for Handmade Soap, Perfume Composition, and Perfume courses at Community Colleges and affiliated art studios. **8. **R&D Director, Meridian Dynamics Medical, Stock Code: 6445; Tech Semiconductors, Stock Code: 6264 **9. **Author of "Event-Driven Programming," Flag Publishing House **10. **Translator of numerous computer-related books, Songge Publishing House **Class Size:** Private group perfumery course for two, three, four, or five participants. Its popularity is such that various scented products feature freesia, from small-brand custom perfumes to home fragrance diffusers, mists, shampoos, and body washes. Considering that a 100ml bottle of Jo Malone's "English Pear & Freesia" perfume retails for over NT$5,000, while a bottle of "English Pear & Freesia" body wash is only NT$200, have you ever wondered: "What's the difference in scent given such a price disparity?" You absolutely must be able to discern this! Otherwise, what is the purpose of spending so much on authentic brand-name perfumes? Generally, for high-end and affordable products within the same fragrance family, the scent of the premium item is richer and more natural, while the affordable version tends to be simpler with a more pronounced "chemical" feel. What exactly is this "chemical feel"? It's a difficult term to define but relatively easy to understand. The chemical feel is perceived in contrast to the scent of natural ingredients. Substances found in nature are inherently complex compounds, resulting in rich, varied, and relatively balanced scents. Synthetic ingredients/isolates, in contrast, are single components with direct, simple aromas. If not handled carefully during composition, they can lead to an imbalance in the scent spectrum. Another reason for the chemical feel is when perfumers use synthetic ingredients/isolates to create scents that don't exist in nature, making it difficult for our olfactory senses to categorize them based on experience, thus creating the impression of a chemical feel. Is a chemical feel inherently bad? Not necessarily. Perfumes made solely from natural ingredients might lack the lightness and transparency that fans of commercial perfumes appreciate, feeling more like scents found in a spa. In such cases, adding a moderate amount of synthetic ingredients to introduce a "chemical feel," subtly deviating from pure nature, often leads people to say, "That's it! It smells like a commercial perfume!" Of course, professional perfumers consider more than just the scent; cost is often the biggest factor. Even if they know a particular ingredient would elevate the quality, they might have to forgo it due to budget constraints. This is especially true for daily-use fragrances, where the cost of fragrance ingredients might be a tenth or even less of that in fine perfumes. Professional perfumers are like scent magicians. What might require dozens of ingredients to compose a fragrance profile can be achieved with a few lower-cost alternatives that evoke a similar feeling, making it difficult for consumers to distinguish the difference upon first sniff. If we disregard cost, are there any logical principles to follow in perfumery? I personally categorize perfumery into two main structures: one based on natural ingredients with synthetics as support, and the other based on synthetic ingredients with naturals as support. Why this division? Let me explain the thought process. Of course, this is just my personal interpretation, and you may have different approaches~ 1. **Natural Ingredients as the Core, Synthetics as Support** Natural ingredients represent most of the scents people encounter in daily life. Because these scents are familiar, it's less likely to create strange, nauseating, or dizzying smells. However, this is both an advantage and a disadvantage. Like partners living under the same roof, while they don't dislike each other, they might lack the spark of a passionate romance. Creating perfumes with lightness, transparency, and long-lasting sillage using only natural ingredients is challenging and requires extensive experience and experimentation. Even highly experienced perfumers can only achieve a certain level with naturals alone. Achieving the lightness, transparency, longevity, and diffusion characteristic of commercial perfumes is practically impossible. However, by adding a moderate amount of synthetic ingredients to adjust the scent, natural perfumes can achieve a quality similar to commercial fragrances without an overpowering "chemical feel." They retain a natural, comfortable aroma while possessing characteristics of lightness, transparency, and longevity. What synthetic ingredients can be added? Please refer to the article "Adding Synthetic Ingredients to Natural Perfume Formulas." Of course, the list of suitable synthetics isn't limited to those mentioned; green notes (leaf alcohol), fruity notes (Beta Damascone/Rose Oxide), aldehydic notes (Aldehyde C-11/C-12), and sweet notes (Vanillin/Maltol)... are all excellent additions. Perhaps you might wonder: "If anything can be added, how is this different from composing with synthetic ingredients/isolates?" To learn synthetic ingredient/isolate perfumery, the first step is naturally to study and smell the perfumery materials. Once you're familiar with the ingredients, the next step is learning to compose fragrance accords, also known as imitation scents. For example, a basic rose accord can be constructed using these three ingredients (refer to the article "Fragrance Accords"): PEA (Phenylethyl Alcohol) 444 CITRONELLOL 333 GERANIOL 222 The ingredients listed above do not include rose absolute/essential oil. However, when using natural ingredients as the core structure, we wouldn't do it this way. Instead, we would use rose absolute as the main component and add various ingredients to invigorate the rose. For instance: Rose Geranium / to enhance the rose scent Ylang Ylang / to add sensuality to the rose Neroli / to create a fresh and bright feel Clove Bud / to add complexity Violet Leaf / for a green and sophisticated nuance Once the main rose accord is complete, a few synthetic ingredients are added to adjust the scent. For example, adding Rose Oxide for a sweet, lychee-like note, or Ambrettolide to create a musky rose, or Aldehyde C-11/C-12 for an aldehydic rose. This rose structure, still primarily natural, becomes slightly less "natural" due to the addition of some synthetics, introducing a "chemical feel" and an "abstract quality." Perfumes composed this way will not be uncomfortable even for devotees of natural scents, nor will they cause dizziness or nausea. 2. **Synthetic Ingredients as the Core, Natural Ingredients as Support** This structure is the primary method for composing with synthetic ingredients/isolates, blending synthetics, isolates, and natural ingredients. However, in this framework, natural ingredients are not the protagonists; they typically serve to adjust the overall scent. In many cases, natural ingredients are used to add richness and complexity to the aroma, preventing the final product from smelling too synthetic. When composing this way, fragrance accords are the most crucial element in constructing the entire perfume. For example, to create a "Patchouli Rose" type of fragrance, the first step is to determine the rose accord. While this rose accord might include Damask or Centifolia Rose absolute, it wouldn't be the main component. In most accords, natural ingredients play a blending role. Since it's a "Patchouli Rose" type, Patchouli essential oil must be included. Patchouli is an essential oil with an extremely complex composition that is still difficult to replicate with synthetic ingredients, and fortunately, it's not prohibitively expensive. In reality, the most significant difference between high-end perfumes and daily-use fragrances often lies in the use of natural ingredients. Natural ingredients are costly, their quality can be inconsistent, and they sometimes contain allergens – all factors that daily-use fragrances tend to avoid.
