Shop Owner's Note:
It is fate that brought three pieces of Taiwanese lightning-struck yellow cypress into my possession. As lightning struck from the very center, the areas suitable for crafting beads are limited, as seen in the photos. Moreover, the lightning strike was so severe that many parts of the wood show cracks and burn marks, which cannot be used for making beads. Therefore, the finished products are truly rare, complete pieces of cypress that can be used to make beads. These are incredibly precious! Please cherish them!
Taiwanese cypress is world-renowned, but lightning striking cypress is also uncommon. This piece has been stored for several years and only recently came into my hands. While not as ancient as thousand-year-old Reishi mushroom wood, it is a cypress tree over two hundred years old with a diameter exceeding 40cm! The beads made from it have beautiful wood grain and an exceptional aroma. Most importantly, it is lightning-struck cypress, which is incredibly effective at warding off evil spirits! This is also a limited edition item! Once these three pieces are gone, there will be no more!
There are three styles:
Designer Beaded Bracelet: 8mm beads * 12 pcs, 10*14mm barrel beads * 6 pcs, inner circumference approximately 16cm, suitable for wrist sizes 14-16cm.
10mm beads * 20 pcs, inner circumference approximately 17.5cm, suitable for wrist sizes 15-17.5cm.
12mm beads * 18 pcs, inner circumference approximately 17.5cm, suitable for wrist sizes 15-17.5cm.
(Custom sizing service for bracelets is currently unavailable.)
About Taiwanese Cypress:
Naturally grown Taiwanese cypress is generally divided into red cypress and yellow cypress. Yellow cypress grows at higher latitudes than red cypress. It has thick bark, green leaves, and a richer fragrance. Taiwanese cypress is of excellent quality due to Taiwan's abundant rainfall and high humidity, resulting in high oil content and beautiful wood grain. Research by the Council of Agriculture has confirmed that Taiwanese cypress, without any preservative (formaldehyde) treatment, has a natural mildew resistance rate of over 90%, the most stable shrinkage rate, and is the least prone to cracking. Experts and scholars in botany and medicine worldwide have conducted various experiments, confirming that it contains natural components such as Rhodinic acid and phytoncides. Notably, it possesses Hinokitiol, a component unique to Taiwanese cypress, which can purify the air, deodorize, relieve stress, and promote relaxation.
About Lightning-Struck Wood:
For individuals with sensitive constitutions or spiritual awareness, lightning-struck wood's energy can feel like a comfortable, unobstructed flow of electricity throughout the body, without any stinging or discomfort. However, entities that are impure will not favor its energy (reasons below).
Lightning-struck wood, also known as "evil-warding wood," is a supreme divine wood in Taoist practices. The book "Wan Fa Gui Zong" lists it as the foremost sacred wood for crafting ritual implements.
While it is now commonly believed that due to Taoism's emphasis on using lightning-struck wood in recent centuries, it was exclusively used by Taoists. In fact, over 2500 years ago, Buddhist scriptures already mentioned the use of lightning-struck wood for making vajras.
For instance, Volume 2 of the "Dharani Sutra" discusses the creation of a five-pronged vajra: "Using the heartwood of a lightning-struck date tree (i.e., wood struck by lightning) is also acceptable. Before making the vajra, one must first chant auspicious mantras over the metal and other materials one hundred and eight times..."
The "Susiddhi Sutra" describes the making of vajras: "For all vajra-related activities, use wood that has been struck by heavenly fire (i.e., lightning). This can be wood from a neem tree, white sandalwood, or rosewood. Carve a three-pronged vajra from any of these woods. When performing Homa rituals or chanting mantras, hold it in the left hand. It can accomplish all tasks, hence the name 'vajra'." ...
The "Jing You Liu Ren Shen Ding Jing," Volume 2, Chapter 30, "Explanation of Making Models," states: "'Xuan Nü says: 'The method of making models uses maple wood for heaven. Maple wood refers to a separate branch of a maple tree that grows sideways from the main trunk. From a distance, it appears to be at the same level as the mother tree, but upon closer inspection, its height differs. It also uses the heartwood of a date tree for the earth, symbolizing the yin and yang of heaven and earth. Maple is the essence of various trees, and date is the servant of all trees. Among natural objects, these are the most spiritual.' The 'Note on the Law of Thunder God's Killing' states: 'There are three types of models. In terms of wood, lightning-struck date heartwood (i.e., date wood struck by lightning) is the highest grade, sandalwood is the middle grade, and persimmon wood is the lowest. If lightning-struck date heartwood is unavailable, an old axle can also be used as a substitute, provided it is carefully selected...'"
It is evident that both Buddhist and Taoist traditions highly value lightning-struck wood, with its heartwood being considered the highest grade.
Why is lightning-struck wood so highly regarded? It is likely related to the deities like the Thunder God and Lightning Mother who control thunder and lightning. There are even expert research articles such as "A Study of the Thunder God and Lightning Mother." The Thunder God is a deity of justice; he does not strike those who do good but uses thunder and lightning to smite those who violate heavenly laws, such as demons or wicked individuals. This can also be found in the "Lei Gong Cuo Sha Lü" in the "History of Song." It appears that the Thunder God does not strike randomly due to the need for electrical discharge but follows specific laws. This principle is widely known, and people often curse wrongdoers by saying, "May lightning strike them!" In ancient times, as people interacted with nature, they gradually recognized the powerful energy imbued in lightning-struck wood after a lightning strike. This energy could drive away evil spirits, reward good deeds, and maximize magical power. Therefore, lightning-struck wood has been secretly sought after by practitioners since ancient times to harness its spiritual power and enhance their abilities. Wearing it not only protects against the approach of evil energies but also brings auspiciousness and good fortune, hence its treasured status since antiquity.
I. Identification of Lightning-Struck Wood:
1. Exterior Burn Marks:
Look for signs of lightning strikes. Typically, lightning-struck wood will have broken branches and burn marks from the strike.
2. Energy Detection and Sensing:
All lightning-struck wood carries electrical energy. After removing the wood, one can use touch, pulse sensations, or special abilities to detect the release of electrical energy. Lightning-struck wood has palpable energy that can be sensed by sensitive body parts, manifesting as warmth, tingling, or swelling.
3. Lightning Pattern Identification:
All lightning-struck wood exhibits lightning patterns. Identifying these patterns is challenging and usually requires guidance from experienced craftsmen. Most people find it difficult to discern.
The three methods above should be used in conjunction. Relying solely on human sensation to determine if wood is lightning-struck is extremely erroneous. An individual who has achieved some level of internal energy cultivation can project their energy into any object, causing it to feel warm, tingly, or swollen. This does not definitively prove it is lightning-struck wood or a result of energy infusion. Therefore, judging lightning-struck wood should not depend solely on sensation but should also incorporate the aforementioned identification methods to accurately determine genuine lightning-struck wood.
When used to craft ritual implements, lightning-struck wood can be used to pray for clear skies and rain, govern the three realms, summon spirits, vanquish demons and evil, dispatch talismans, guide souls, send off wandering spirits, endorse talismans, protect homes and bodies, treat illnesses, and eliminate epidemics.
Legend has it that among the common folk in Northeast China, lightning-struck wood is widely believed to be struck by heavenly lightning and that ghosts greatly fear it, making it the most potent artifact for warding off evil. This is because the information of spirits being neutralized by the Thunder God and Lightning Mother remains on the lightning-struck wood, exerting a powerful deterrent effect on spirits, making it suitable as a protective item for residences. Some folk shamans and deities also fear lightning-struck wood because the "possessions" on shamans are often vengeful spirits, wild ghosts, and low-level spirits like foxes and snakes.
Common people further believe that trees struck down by lightning possess evil-dispelling properties. This is because the lightning has already driven away malevolent spirits from the tree, so other spirits dare not approach it upon seeing the tree. Therefore, in Northeast China, people often string a piece of lightning-struck wood onto a rope and wear it on children's wrists or hang it around their necks, believing this will prevent children from being "possessed."
