A: When silver jewelry turns black, "oxidation" is a common folk term. Oxidation refers to a substance reacting with oxygen. However, silver (jewelry) turning black is a reaction with "sulfur" in the air, forming "silver sulfide." The black substance on the surface of silver (jewelry) (which can be coffee-colored, light brown, dark brown, or reddish-brown) is "silver sulfide." If silver (jewelry) is not properly maintained, it will lose its luster and turn black. Therefore, the correct term is "sulphidation," which results from reactions with hydrogen sulfide in the air or sulfur dioxide in moisture, forming silver sulfide on the surface of the silver (jewelry).
