In 2021, the birthstones were revised for the first time in 63 years, and chrysoberyl cat's eye was certified as a new birthstone for February. The name Chrysoberyl is said to be derived from the Greek words "chrysos" meaning "gold" and "beryllos." Those with a chatoyancy effect (cat's eye effect) among chrysoberyls are called "chrysoberyl cat's eyes." In Japan, they are also referred to as "Nekomeishi" (cat's eye stone). For specimens containing needle-like crystals, a cabochon cut is applied parallel to these crystals. When light is shone upon it, a milky white light reflects in a band.
