About Wood Firing 'Wood firing' is a traditional kiln firing method, reaching temperatures above 1200 degrees Celsius using wood fuel. It leaves "fire marks" naturally imprinted on the ceramic by the direct flames, and the ash from the burning wood creates rich, warm colors and varied textures that electric or gas kilns cannot achieve. Compared to regular electric or gas kilns, the entire wood firing process—from stacking the kiln, ignition, to sealing and cooling—takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors like humidity, wood dryness, the speed of stoking, and kiln placement, can all influence the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher breakage rate. Experienced wood-firing artisans meticulously consider the kiln's airflow when stacking. They plan the placement of pieces of varying sizes, estimate the flame path, determine the stoking of wood and charcoal, and control the firing temperature.
