Rousseau mentioned in a letter to a friend before his death that this painting depicts a woman sleeping on a sofa, dreaming that she was taken into a forest and heard the sound of a snake charmer playing a flute. This painting contains two layers of imagery. The first layer is the nude woman on the sofa, the fruit on the tree, and the snake in the grass symbolizing Rousseau's fantasy of the Garden of Eden; while the dark and mysterious snake player who plays the flute brings music and magic.
