**Humpback Whale**
Also known as the "great winged whale," humpback whales can be found in almost all major oceans. They are named after the resemblance of their dorsal fin and tubercles to the "Zato" (a blind performer carrying a biwa lute on their back) from Japan's Edo period.
Humpback whales are renowned for their breaching displays, exceptionally long pectoral fins, and the complex pulse songs of adult whales. Each humpback whale has its own unique frequency and amplitude, and typically only male whales emit more distinct songs during mating season.
The songs of male humpback whales continuously change as they age, speculated to be because novel songs are more appealing to females. Curiously, their songs are rarely repeated, even after more than a decade.
**IUCN Status: Least Concern (LC)**
