This perennial succulent herb belongs to the Asphodelaceae family and the Gasteria genus. It's a foliage plant. Young plants have leaves arranged in two rows, which gradually form a rosette as more leaves grow. The flower stalk emerges from the base of the leaves. It resembles a traditional Chinese gold ingot. The leaves are fleshy and thick, tongue-like, with a smooth surface. They may have white spots or variegated stripes. Due to its small size, diverse varieties, and ease of cultivation, it has gained popularity in recent years. Under strong sunlight, the leaves turn reddish. Gasteria gracilis var. minima boasts beautiful leaves, some with variegation and some without. The plain ones are entirely green. Those with two or more colors are considered variegated, known as "Zibao Jin" (子寶錦), each with unique colors and characteristics. The flower stalk emerges from the base of the leaf axils. The flowers are small, mostly red and green. Flowering is typically abundant from winter to spring. 【Propagation】 Although Gasteria gracilis var. minima grows slowly, its base often produces many small offsets, which can be separated for planting. Therefore, propagation is mainly through division. It can also be propagated by seed, making it relatively easy to multiply. Cultivation is straightforward, and it's easy to achieve a lush, overflowing pot, providing a great sense of accomplishment! 【Sunlight Needs】 It is relatively shade-tolerant, making it easier to cultivate for plant enthusiasts with less ideal lighting conditions. 【Growth Habits】 Prefers semi-shady locations with good ventilation. Excessive sunlight will deepen the color of the normally green leaves. It thrives in loose, fertile, well-draining sandy loam as a growing medium. The potting mix can be prepared from decaying leaves, fine sand, and garden soil. It is quite cold-hardy; overwintering temperatures should not fall below 5°C. Avoid direct strong sunlight in summer, as it can scorch the leaves, causing black spots and leading to thin, less vibrant foliage. It is relatively drought-tolerant. 【Care Instructions】 1. Watering: Follow the principle of watering only when dry, and watering thoroughly when you do. Control watering during winter, as overwatering can lead to root rot. It is recommended to water once every 20-30 days in summer and once every 30-40 days in winter. 2. For Gasteria gracilis var. minima placed on a room table, ensure good ventilation and light exposure. If kept in darkness for extended periods, take it out to receive sunlight when available. It can overwinter safely indoors without special protection. If kept on a balcony, avoid direct strong sunlight in summer; bright, indirect light is suitable.
