Its surface has a gentle matte finish that will become lustrous with wear, developing a patina over time.** This is produced by repeatedly grinding cinnabar into fine particles to form a paste, mixing it with water, letting it settle, and collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This liquid is then allowed to settle again (the "shuifei" purification method). The resulting cinnabar mud at the bottom is air-dried and then compressed using traditional methods. Upon cross-section, even fine, scattered mineral shimmers can be observed within. **"Emperor Sand"** **A bright, true red with higher hardness.** This is created by progressively purifying natural cinnabar ore through multiple stages including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/shuifei purification/high polishing**, followed by traditional compression. Emperor Sand has almost no visible mineral shimmer on the surface, though it is present internally. The exterior features a **high-polishing** process that imparts a metallic sheen, especially vibrant in sunlight, giving it a striking metallic quality. **"Zijing Sand"** **A purplish-red hue, with slightly lower hardness than Emperor Sand.** This is made by processing natural cinnabar ore through multiple stages such as **crushing/grinding/sieving**, but **without the flying water purification process**. Consequently, the surface is less refined and reveals small, scattered mineral shimmers, resembling a starry sky. **"Crystal Sand"** **A purplish-red, translucent color.** These are large cinnabar particles directly chipped from the ore. The crystalline structure is clearly visible on the surface. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng - well) with a dot in the middle, signifying the extraction of something from a dug mine. This substance was cinnabar. Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, cinnabar came to be called "朱砂" (zhūshā), with "丹" and "朱" describing the color, and "砂" describing the shape – irregular granular mineral particles. Cinnabar's color is enduring.
