Paul Berthon (1872/1909) was a poster artist in the French Art Nouveau period. His style is similar to that of Alphonse Mucha (1860/1939) in the same period. Before moving to Paris, he received his painting education in South France. After that, he studied at the Painting School (Ecole Normale d'Enseignement de Dessin). He was influenced by the master of decorative arts Eugène Grasset (1845/1917). A key figure who promoted the early Art Nouveau movement.
Bai Tong uses autumn colors and thick and obvious lines to form his own style. It can be seen that Japanese prints and nature's molding of him—especially in the modeling of flowers and animals. He specializes in French medieval art. Way of expression. Unlike most new art poster artists, Bai Tong’s lithograph posters are not for advertising, and there is no text in the screen. In other words, Bai Tong’s posters are not pure commercial advertisements, but can exist alone, just like works of art. .
Bai Tong created a series of posters with women as the theme. The protagonist of this poster is the famous French stage actress Sarah Bernhardt (Sarah Bernhardt, 1844/1923). She is the first modern female celebrity with a worldwide reputation, which is more than Lady Gaga, and this happened in the 19th century. Sarah is good at managing her own reputation. She is extremely concerned about her personal image and actively spreads her image. Photography was becoming popular at the time. The most famous portrait photographer in Paris was Nadar, and Sarah asked him to take a large number of Silver photographs of herself. Her photos are printed in large quantities in the form of merchandise that can be sold. This trend initiated by her has far-reaching influence... In addition to photography, she can be seen in many prints and oil paintings.
In 1894, Sarah needed posters to promote the new play "Gismonda" (Gismonda), which hit it off with Mucha, who had first arrived in Paris. Known for his theatrical performances.
**Our 1901 work is low-key and elegant compared to Mucha's rich and colorful tones. Bai Tong uses new art's winding lines and rich iris depictions, using autumn orange colors to add romantic and mysterious imagination to his works.**
